Top game for Vítor Melo Pereira - last chance for the world champions, which they failed to take, and were eliminated by virtue of their 0-2 loss. First half was quite intense for the referee from Portugal without having too many situations to compute, second was a bit easier. Melo Pereira was overall (at least) decent, though I was not fully convinced by his refereeing; missed foul directly before a goal had a big bearing on the result and spoils his performance.
Melo Pereira convinced on a basic level, but I did not see him as a sophisticated decision-taker in either foul detection / selection or disciplinary control. His decisions were a bit too random for a World Cup-level, in my view. A very clear tug before the second Denmark goal was apparently missed not by only all the officials, but all the players too - without it, it is inconceivable that the (crucial!) goal would have been scored: an important crucial mistake.
Carlos Matos was not really challenged; Elise Doriri incorrectly flagged in an important situation (59').

Weird performance in a weird match. He looked "shy" to me, never really interested in taking charge, even only small, short whistles. Disciplinary was so-so as well, more lenient (48'/Reckless, 60'/foul comparable to booking in 26', 77'/Blatant holding). One good warning given in 6', otherwise not really much communication.
ReplyDeleteI can't understand how he and AR2 Doriri missed the clear shirt pull before the 2-0. Also, how did nobody complain about that, it was clear as day. Even in the media, no mention at all. Weird. Micoud's high boot looked like a deliberate attack for me: RC should have been given (80'). I don't know what Desailly was doing and nowadays the Danish player would have been screaming on the ground after half-a-second, but this ear grab is VC as well. Yet nobody seemed to care.
Weird match. Nobody talked about the referee. But they should have...
