Not a challenging game to handle, but quite a lot of interesting isolated situations for Óscar Ruiz. Referee from Colombia did a good job in this game. His disciplinary control kept a lid on everything, including a brilliantly issued Red Card (SFP) at 58'.
Simulation in additional time at the end of the first half was more of a play on for me (I am against unambiguous statements made before tournaments such as "all simulations will be cautioned!", it puts too much pressure on the referees (funny to think that sixteen years later referees were banned from simulation or dissent cautions!)). Missed card at 57', some more cautions for heavy tackles would have been better, but in the 2002 paradigm they aren't a bigger problem.
Very busy game for AR Ali Tomusange, if we back him regarding some active / passive offsides which would be clearly wrong nowadays, he did very well. Curtis Charles was not really challenged, though incorrect at 80' to raise his flag.

"Keeping a lit on it" is quite perfect. Ruiz is the middle ground - referees like Mane try to avoid cards, some others are quite strict. Ruiz gives enough to keep control, but not all of them that should or could be given.
ReplyDeleteAs for the major scenes: No matter how often the commentator bemoans it, the RC was a fully correct call for a clear SFP tackle. I find the diving call in 45'+1 very harsh, there was a clear push. Penalty possible, play-on the best call, but a booking for simulation is IMHO even wrong.
Otherwise: Possible/missed cards in 41' (missed foul as well, AR1!), 58', 64' and 79'. The encroachment management in 22' was rather non-existent it must be said. No idea what he decided in 49' (Offside? Dive without booking? Imaginary foul by the attacker?)
The big picture: Good control, solid decisions, with some mistakes. The further appointment he got wasn't undeserved.
