Winner-takes-all player to decide who would play Brazil in the next round, and who would be eliminated. Belgium had to win, and won - Russia did not get the draw they needed. Experienced European referee Kim Milton Nielsen was in charge. In the boring Germany - Ireland game, I described his style as a bit lazy, top-down authority and lenient. He ascertained all of those impressions here; not the most aesthetic refereeing, especially on the first count, but in the end he steered this game to an unproblematic conclusion.
His disciplinary choices are best not described as lenient or strict, they they tended toward the former, but more as indeed lazy. If you watch the highlight you'll see what I mean. Perhaps he was fortunate that there was no replay of the early striking offence which occured after the correctly awarded one-nil-scoring freekick: to me it looked like a Violent Conduct. He missed a high number of fouls, one in pretty amusing circumstances if you watch his gestures in frame-by-frame (57'), but that didn't impede his control.
Philip Sharp was pretty anonymous, Sankar Komaleeswaran was good, but he made a poor mistake at 76'.

A bit frustrating to watch - he's hard to describe, maybe fickle would be best. His cards ranged from mandatory to surprised-he-gave-it to wrong, while he was very lenient in some scenes for no noticeable reason (late heavy challenge in 3', potential SYC in 34', no foul in 57'). He showed good eyesight and perception in 7' and 12', but it does indeed seem like there was a VC in the first scene.
