49 GERPAR Batres

HIGHLIGHTS

Having succeeded in the very challenging Denmark - Senegal game, this rather boring affair to open the knockout stage was never really going to test Carlos Batres. He performed well. His stern leadership style was respected by the players, who appreciated this serious and predictable referee. He clinched a very good performance in additional time, when he correctly issued a Red Card for Violent Conduct.

Dramane Danté had quite a busy game and performed well, Curtis Charles was a bit quieter, but incorrectly flagged in a tight and important situation at 76'.

Carlos Batres - 8,5
Curtis Charles - 8,2
Dramane Danté - 8,4

  1. Interesting theoretical situations at 45', 70' and 72' where I would appreciate others' views :)

    1. 45': The player is lucky not to get a RC, but hard to blame the referee (Difficult to detect and to be sure about the intention)
70': Nowadays a clear penalty, but not in 2002, I guess
72': Clearly no SFP for me (ball is played first and contact at the foot, not higher), YC is correct

    2. 45' red card for VC--and I have every confidence that Batres would have given it if it was detected.

70' the handball was not clearly punishable then, as it was not deliberate and you'd have to start asking questions about unnatural arm position... but maybe the push in the back was punishable? Either way, not an expected penalty then.

72' definitely yellow card. Contact is low on the leg/foot and with the initial play of the ball, just not close enough to SFP--even last decade when the threshold was lower.

    3. Thanks! I agree with you both.

  2. Strong performance in a match that didn't seem too challenging. Batres was firm, in-charge and completely unbothered by protests or delaying actions like in 26': Player stays on the ground to prolong his booking? Fine, do your paperwork in the meantime. Various complaints after a card decision? Take your notes, tell them calmly but with a stern face to go away. I agree with his assessment in nearly every scene, I'd even say no cards missed and all given absolutely correct. Well-spotted VC in added time, good also to caution Ballack for provoking it.

We had a possible penalty in 66', seems like Ballack was holding his opponent quite a lot. But in this mass of players, it is hard to tell if there wasn't a corresponding or even earlier Paraguay foul. Never a crucial mistake for me, not without better evidence.

    1. Regarding 45': Calling this VC would not be wrong in my eyes, though it looks more like the player was trying to foul his opponent to stop a potential attack after loosing the ball.
