54 BRABEL Prendergast
HIGHLIGHTS
A very good World Cup match. Belgium played an excellent match and were pretty unlucky to not beat and eliminate Brazil. The finger of Belgium's blame ought to be pointing in their own direction - not that of Peter Prendergast, the referee from Jamaica, who correctly disallowed Marc Wilmots' goal in the first half. Prendergast served football well in this game and was a pretty anonymous figure throughout, as he could just allow the players to play a pretty thrilling match.
Marc Wilmots said in a television interview, quite melodramatically that "when the goal was disallowed, I knew it was impossible [sic] for us to win that match". Replays did Prendergast no favours, but the live sequence suggests that he was (even clearly) correct to disallow Wilmots header - his barge at 03:13 in the highlights clip impeded Roque Júnior, who read the flight of the ball better than Wilmots, from playing the ball. Prendergast, well-placed, detected that better than any replay angles and correctly blew for a defensive freekick. Perhaps Wilmots is better served looking at the high number of chances Belgium missed at 0-0 as to explain his nation's elimination, rather than blaming a correct refereeing decision.
For the rest - Prendergast had a good evening. He allowed the players scope to play an exciting match, and his intervention for two fouls in the mid-part of the first half, carding a cynical (and SPA?) kick and a reckless tackle send the right signal. His strong and unimpressed presence helped a lot.
Good performance by both Juryj Dupanaŭ and Mohamed Saeed on their respective lines.

Without close-up replays, I would fully support the decision to cancel the BEL goal in 36', looked like a clear shove beforehand. Apart from that, little to say (possible bookings in 10', 87'). Two good cautions seemed to help insure all remained fair.
