55 JPNTUR Collina
HIGHLIGHTS
Despite being a game played by the host nation, Japan - Turkey was a weak piece of football for a World Cup Knockout match - the most famous international referee, Pierluigi Collina was the referee. He did a good job, and everything that had ensued and was about to follow confirmed the safest pair of hands would blow World Cup 2002's final whistle.
There is not too much to say about the match officials' performance this time. Collina issued the most mandatory cards, and his manner was very good. How relaxed the referee from Italy looked on the pitch is what struck me, allowing him to most successfully use a range of gestures, mimics and tones in order to lead the game.
Maciej Wierzbowski and Paul Smith had quite quiet afternoons controlling their respective lines.

To be honest, there is little to complain about here. A rather lenient foul detection and card selection, but I only had two scenes (18', 67') where I would have prefered a booking. The YC in 45' had a red-ish (SFP) hue for me. Both penalty area incidents (51', 70') looked like correct play-on calls. Not overly challenging, good performance.
