7 ENGSWE Simon
HIGHLIGHTS
An easy match for Simon. He was, on the whole, fine. But his decision-making was not much better than fine, and his presence was a bit irritating and he succeeded in spite of that, rather than because of it.
Clear missed freekick to Sweden at 51' is the biggest mistake; while personally a Second Yellow Card late in the 1H (Campbell) and a penalty early in the 2H (for charging) I would have liked to have been given, both times you can find some arguments against their giving, so no crucial mistake.
I'm split between 8,2 and 8,3 but, unchallenged, he did not get that much wrong.
ARs seldom had to make offside judgements.

Also some arguments for penalty in 51'/52': The hand still touches (pushes?) the attacker's back in the penalty area.

DeleteJust to add - Simon (out of shot) was reported by the English commentators as having been "fifty yards away" from the offence, with AR Oliveira not close either according to them, so their decision of a defensive freekick must have been sth of a guess.
Simon is a conundrum. His decision aren't that bad, but his presentation is theatrical at best. Prime examples are 28' and 45'+2 - both decisions are very good (indeed excellent YC for dissent) but the presentation is dreadful, with 28' just unrespectful. I saw three rather heavy tackles (49', 60', 71') with the Scholes one in 49' being an absolutely mandatory YC - the strong warning given was not enough. Campbell's first YC was very dark for me, if in 42' there is a contact with the second leg, he should have been sent off.
ReplyDelete51' is interesting - in the penalty box, I understand why he decided not to whistle, but there are plenty arguments for free kick, penalty and play on - the latter choice the "savest" but the one with the smallest amount of arguments in favour. Simon seemed to be far away and unable to judge.
Not the best impression in my eyes, but more 8.2-ish for me.
