What a tough game for the referee from Korea! Quite the challenge for a WC début, too...
Overall, Kim navigated this game very well. It is true that his disciplinary control was more reactive than proactive, but he kept everything under control and his technical accuracy high in dynamic game with anxious players, and he was ten minutes away from realising a really satisfying WC performance (if you support no penalty at 35'). I would recommend reading HowardMaxi's excellent and more detailed analysis of the pre-85' minutes below!
Unluckily caught behind play after an unexpected mistake by the Turkey goalkeeper, Kim correctly sent Alpay off for DOGSO at 85', but incorrectly awarded a penalty to Brazil - the holding was clearly outside the penalty area. His AR Vladimir Fernández was in perfect position, but Kim never (in shot) looked out to him for help. Salvadoran should have buzzed his teammate when he saw that he gave a penalty, also that Kim was so far away, and couldn't have had the best perception of what happened if at first he reached for a yellow card only. Unfortunately they both ultimately failed and decided the game with that call.
After that, Kim lost control of his decisions, particularly not to punish encroaching Brazil players at a freekick in additional time.
And finally, the famous Rivaldo incident at the end of the game. In my eyes, the optimal decision was to caution Rivaldo for simulation (feigning injury) and to directly send off Ünsal, rather than issue him with a second caution. In any case the Turkey player had to go. It was unfortunate that it made Fernández and Kim look like idiots, deciding, credibly, as they did.
Fernández was very good in the rest of the game, and showed an eagle eye to disallow a Brazil goal at 63' for offside. Viva Krishnan was unchallenged, and correct with an onside at 28'.

Wow, what a match this was. Lots of controversy, but from the looks of it, also some really good football from both teams! I have to say: Mostly, I liked his performance. He was more distant than firm, no player's friend and certainly not a match manager, which would have helped him later on (perhaps).
ReplyDeleteI think he navigated it well for most of the time, I think the decision in 34' (foul, free kick, no YC) was absolutely brilliant and spot-on! Very strict towards dissent, a good prevention against LoR/SPA offences in the first half. YC in 44' instead of DOGSO borderline, but fully supportable - BRA player had some way to go and a defender to intervene. Penalty appeal in 35' remains inconclusive for me without better footage. AR Fernández with what seemed to be a great offside call in 62'!
The bad things: Lack of verbal warnings (11', 28'), non-existent encroachment management - the limited soft skills he displayed didn't help here. Generally, free kick management was bad, like in 69'. Card-wise, he should have chosen 58' for a YC for LoR as a means of balancing, Lúcio's foul in 65' was a clear SPA for me and should have resulted in a booking.
He was unlucky in the penalty scene, in his defence, the pull ends just before the line, but as a team, they had to get it right - too blatant to be ignored, a mistake that just can't happen at a WC at such a crucial moment. Showing procedure was pretty bad as well, he did not impress with his decision making and communication here.
SYC in added time was just right for me. Unsporting act, but it wasn't with excessive force - more an annoyed "Get it on!" than VC. Therefore, I agree with the SYC, though Rivaldo's head clutching should have resulted in a booking. He could have avoided all that by not giving the wrong corner kick, manage the free kick on the other side of the pitch properly or whistling for FT (two minutes looked like way too little!).
A shame, because it certainly wasn't all bad, in fact, I would have liked to see another game. Sometimes, there is little between an excellent performance in a top game and a (medially perceived) disaster. I feel for him.
