63 KORTUR Al-Fadhli

HIGHLIGHTS

Originally Anders Frisk's game, he was removed and replaced by an all non-UEFA quartet led by Saad Al-Fadhli, for the third place playoff between hosts Korea and tournament surprise Turkey, assisted by Ali Al-Traifi and Héctor Vergara. Only one of the officials could look back on a good performance - Vergara.

A short report on how the match officials faired in the ceremonial game.

Referee, Saad Al-Fadhli

The problems evident in his first two games, Denmark - Uruguay and South Africa - Spain, came to a head here - disappointing performance by the referee from Kuwait. Having treated water in his group stage games, he was visibly out of his depth here. His deficiencies in technical accuracy, soft skills, tactical proficiency, disciplinary control and general ability to take the lead in a match were on show here. The mid-part of the first half was quite hard to watch, in all honesty.

In addition, Al-Fadhli and his AR Ali Al-Traifi missed a violent conduct committed by Turkey no.3 at 22' - referee urged the struck player to "get up"...

AR1, Ali Al-Traifi

An equally disappointing evening for the AR from Saudi Arabia. He missed the aforementioned violent conduct in his vicinity, incorrectly disallowed a goal for Korea and made a further important mistake. He was correct in two other important offside judgements.

AR2, Héctor Vergara

Very good performance by the AR from Canada, well done. Vergara convinced in all six (no other assistant ran the line so often) of his matches and really ought to have been running the line in the real final, a day later.

Saad Al-Fadhli - 7,7
Ali Al-Traifi - 7,2
Héctor Vergara - 8,5
Felipe Ramos Rizo

  1. Was Frisk removed because Turkey was there and they wanted a neutral referee or to compensate for the all-UEFA referees in the final plus both semi-finals?
At WC 2006, there were non-UEFA referees in all 4 last matches (Archundia, Larrionda, Kamikawa, Elizondo)!

    1. Compensation for AFC - Bujsaim not getting the final.

    2. It would have been impossible for Bujsaim to get the WC 2002 final! He did the 2001 Confederations Cup and, historically, none of the referees who did a Confederations Cup final got a World Cup final. It was one or the other!

  2. I don't want to say too much here. A 3rd place match where both teams were highly motivated and his refereeing was restricted to winning smiles and basically whistling only the clearest fouls when there was no other option. I have spoken about this style before, he is lucky there were no really nasty scenes in there. Still, without replays hard to say in some cases, at least one mandatory booking was missed (76') along with a VC that was poorly managed (22').
