After having executed his very lenient, energy-sapping, style in the Argentina - Nigeria quite well, Gilles Veissière was rewarded with this host nation game. This slow-paced, infringement-laden game taking place under great humidity was not ideal for the referee from France - he did not convince this time, even if you support his decision to play on and not give a penalty to Tunisia at the end of the first half (as I would). He simply allowed too much rough and cynical play; not a good performance.
Frédéric Arnault, Haidar Koleit were the ARs - former made an important mistake at 6', man from Lebanon was not really challenged.

One of my least favourite performances so far. His style is clearly one to avoid cautions, but after three YC-worthy fouls that were not carded inside the opening 13 minutes, I'd say he did not quite get the message. It wasn't that much of a control problem as things did not escalate later, but still, these late and partially reckless fouls and some anger between players never disappeared - Veissière did nothing to stamp them out. I'm only couting some of the bigger scenes (5', 10', 13', 41', 43', 46'). Not all of these were mandatory cards, but to eliminate fouls like these, an opening booking in 5' or at the latest in 13' would have been ideal. No such thing was done.
ReplyDeleteApart from that, I think a penalty in 45'+1 would be the better choice, the contact in the hip area is embelished by the Tunisian player, but there were ample reasons for a penalty call.
Gilles Veissière was a disapointment for me in both his matches and his style was not fitting for the sometimes tough knockout matches to come. While not as bad as his national team, him going home after the group stage was also deserved.
