48 POLUSA Lù
HIGHLIGHTS
Quite an interesting game for Lù Jùn. Referee from China showed the same deficiencies in prevention of rougher play as in his first game Croatia - Mexico, but still managed to keep a hand on everything and overall handled the game fine. His lack of action, either verbally or with cards, having played advantage from harder fouls, was a bit irksome. His manner of doing-everything-quickly (lots of gestures to communicate) aroused the impression he could keep his technical accuracy high even in more challenging games. Penalty given was correct, though the offender should probably have been sanctioned as well; should a penalty have been given at 46' too?
AR Jaap Pool lost control of his decisions with crucial / important mistakes at 66' and 78' - the first missing a clear offside for the third Poland goal. To be fair to the assistant from the Netherlands, in the comms kit era, the situation at 66' would have been much easier. Bomer Fierro wrongly flagged at 10'; he did well in the rest of the game.

Not bad, not good. Serviceable, but not really someone who should have gotten a second appointment - compared to Kamikawa at least. I would call his disciplinary style more focused on those cards you absolutely had to give and as long as there are some small doubts, don't. This includes Donovan's furious dissent after the (soft) call that cancelled his goal (5'), rather giving advantages than whistling potential cards (25', 49') or be generally lenient with late (37', 42', 69', 90'+3) or cynical fouls in a SPA/LoR context (49', 76'). Best example the no card decision in the penalty scene.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of penalties, the one given was correct in my eyes, though not the biggest contact. Booking for simulation in 46' is clearly wrong, the USA player has a full hold of the POL player's arm for an extended time, dragging him to the ground. Should have been a penalty. Other crucial mistake made by AR2, Olisadebe became active from an offside position for the third Polish goal.
